The VITAL SIGNS Curriculum Materials Project: Equipment Package
The Onset line of match-book-size, single-channel, 1800 data point capacity dataloggers offer affordability and ease of use. The 1800 data points can be collected over several time ranges. These devices feature an 8-bit A-to-D (256 step resolution) converter, a microcomputer interface, and internal data storage. Common to the Onset dataloggers listed below are a three-year lithium battery and a light which blinks when the logger is collecting data. This line of microprocessor based dataloggers is ideal for quick, informal investigations of building performance patterns.

Onset provides two temperature dataloggers- the HOBO-XT and the HOBO-Temp (not included in VS Equipment Package). The HOBO-Temp has its temperature sensor built into the casing. The HOBO-XT has proven to be more versatile given its larger temperature range -40 deg.F to 253 deg. F and external temperature sensor.

Onset HOBO Voltage Logger
Model No. HOBO-Volt
Onset Computer Corp.
P.O. Box 3450
Pocasset, MA 02559-3450

FAX: 508.563.9477
FAX: 805.964.2129
The HOBO Volt logger records voltage signals in the range of 0 to 2.5V dc. This logger, if reconfigured with a mini-jack plug (see image to the left) becomes very useful when paired with instruments, such as the CO2 Monitor, which provide analog outputs in the same voltage range. The HOBO Volt adds another level of use to instruments, which would otherwise would provide only instantaneous readings.

Onset HOBO Light Intensity Logger
Model No. HOBO-Light
Onset Computer Corp.
P.O. Box 3450
Pocasset, MA 02559-3450
Tel: 508.563.9000
FAX: 508.563.9477
FAX: 805.964.2129
Although the HOBO Light Intensity Logger reports light intensity units, we have found it more reliable to report the on/off status profile of a lighting fixture over time. The logger is small enough to fit between a fluorescent bulb and the fixure's diffuser.

Onset HOBO Relative Humidity Logger
Model No. HOBO-RH
Onset Computer Corp.
P.O. Box 3450
Pocasset, MA 02559-3450
Tel: 508.563.9000
FAX: 508.563.9477
FAX: 805.964.2129
Though not the most accurate (within 5%) of the humidity sensors listed herein, the HOBO-RH logger provides enough information when investigating relative humidity within spaces or air handlers.

The ACR Smartreader series provides 1 to 3 channel data acquisition in a number of special configurations. These dataloggers are approximately the size of a deck of cards and can store several months of data in on-board memory (32,000 data points). The device is programmed, and data transferred, via a simple microcomputer interface. The ACR's 8-bit A-to-D converter offers slightly lower resolution than the Campbell Scientific datalogger, but its small size and essentially wireless installation are major conveniences. All ACR Smartreaders have a built-in temperature sensor.
