Brief: The Shelly Ridge Girl Scout Camp is on the outskirts of Philadelphia. It was designed by Bohlin, Cywinski & Jackson Architects. The Program Center
in the camp is an assembly building that is also intended to serve as an example of an environmentally responsive and energy efficient building.

The goal of this study was to gain a better understanding of the qualities of the physical environment within a building as well as its reaction with and response to the exterior environment. The study examines the building's spatial, thermal, acoustical, and visual environments and considers their integration in the building as a whole

The student investigators were interested in the performance of the south facing Trombe wall and the acoustic qualities of the principal space of the building. The team sought to quantify the levels of sound (& noise) that occur within the space during high use periods.

The students visited the building on several occasions, met with the building's architects, and had discussions with the original representative of the Girl Scout's organization, and the current director of the camp who lives on site year round.

Questionnaires were prepared for use during  interviews with the owner, architects and children using the facilities.

Background: Professor Harrington received a $5000 Vital Signs teaching grant for the spring 1996 term that helped support the student investigation.
