The Vital Signs Project: 1996 Case Study Competition
The following section comprises an outline for submission requirements. The names of the
participant(s) or participating school or faculty sponsor must not appear on any materials
which will be viewed by the jury. To do so will result in disqualification from the
competition.
- Case Study Registration Form. Each Case Study submission must be accompanied by a
completed copy of the Case Study Registration Form, found in the back of this program. The
form should include the registration code number that was assigned to you when you first
registered. This form should be placed in a sealed envelope and attached to the first copy
of the Case Study submission. Other than the Registration Form, the identity of
student(s), faculty, and university affiliations should remain anonymous throughout all
parts of the Case Study submission.
- Abstract. One-page description, not to exceed 250 words will serve as the cover page. It
should include your Registration Code (upper right corner, 18-point font), Case Study
title, building name, brief synopsis of the project, and the major findings.
- Building Workup. The Building Workup is the essence of your Case Study, and must be no
longer than 12 pages, using 10-point font. The format of the written and graphic materials
should be visually well-crafted and include the following components.
- Introduction: Case Study title; building, site, and climate description; design intent;
specific building performance topic(s); resources used to guide your field evaluation,
(e.g. Vital Signs Resource Package(s) or other references);
- Hypothesis: clear postulate of an outcome to the questions of inquiry and what
information provided the basis for your hypothesis;
- Methods: description of methods, survey and physical measurement, and equipment used to
gather and analyze data;
- Results: presentation of the findings of the field work in both narrative and graphic
formats, such as figures, tables, photographs and/or supporting calculations;
- Conclusions: summarize the investigation and conclusions regarding the topic and
hypothesis;
- Appendices. In addition to the Case Study Dossier Form, other appendices may be included
to clarify data or elaborate on methods, but the jury's decision will be based upon the
Abstract, Building Workup, and Case Study Dossier Form only.
- Case Study Dossier Form. Each Case Study submission must be accompanied by a completed
Case
Study Building Dossier Form, available in PDF format at this web site, or from the
Competition Program. (Contact Gail Brager, the Competition Advisor, at gbrager@socrates.berkeley.edu, to have a copy
of the Competition Program mailed to you.) This form should be attached as an appendix to
the Case Study submission.
- Electronic Format. Please submit your work-up paper on a 1.4 MB 3.5 floppy disk(s)
or on an Iomega Zip Drive cartridge. You may compress the file(s) using PKZip (PC) or
Stuffit (Mac). The work-up should be submitted as either a Pagemaker file (Release 5 or 6)
or as a word processing file with accompanying graphic images saved as TIFF files. Graphic
images in your Pagemaker file or TIFF files should be saved in color, even if you print
them in black and white. If your Case Study is selected for the Vital Signs Internet site,
we will publish the images in color. We prefer that word processing files be in Word or
WordPerfect format. If you do not have either of these programs, please save your work as
a text only or ASCII file. On the disk, label all files with the building
name, registration code, the word processing program and version used, and indicate Mac or
PC format.
- Paper Copies. Please submit eight (8) copies of the Case Study submission, printed
double-sided.
Mailing Requirements
Please submit the labeled computer disk(s) and eight (8) paper copies of the Case Study
in a sturdy/protected envelope. All entries must be postmarked on or before December 16,
1996. Entries postmarked after this date will not be considered. It is the
participants responsibility to double-wrap and ship Case Study submissions so they
arrive intact. (Double-wrapping: wrap or secure in an envelope the computer disks and
eight (8) paper copies of the Case Study. The disk(s), abstract, Building Workup,
appendices, and the outside of the envelope should all be labeled with the registration
code. Nothing either within or on the envelope should reveal the identify of the
participants or school. Place this anonymous envelope into a second outer envelope for
mailing or shipping.)
Participants are advised to make copies of their entries prior to submittal, for their own
records. Entries will not be returned. Entries may be shipped, mailed, or hand-delivered
to the address below.
