Joseph Esherick,
1914-1998

Joe, at his Carey House
In addition to UC's official tribute to
Joe Esherick, In
Memoriam, the following bears testimony as well:
Joe loved to travel, and he had a fine eye for architectural photography. He
quietly supported the Architecture Visual Resources Library (aka the slide
library), both as the Chairman who controlled the Departmental purse strings
(1979-1982), and also as a lifelong user of and contributor to its collection.
While on the faculty, Joe made regular gifts of his beautifully composed and
thoroughly documented 35mm travel slides to the AVRL collection. After he
retired from UC, he made a considerable commitment of time organizing, weeding,
and documenting his remaining travel slides. He completed his notes to this
second large gift to AVRL on December 18, 1997, exactly one year before his
death.
Today, approximately 1,000 of these slides
have been cataloged and digitized and added to the AVRL circulating collection,
and are searchable on SPIRO.
The remainder of these slides are housed in six archival volumes in alphabetical
order by country name. Each volume has a copy of Joe's notes and the most recent
inventory of his collection, showing which slides are in SPIRO
and which have not yet been cataloged and digitized.
Norma Esherick donated funds in Joe's
memory to AVRL to support the cataloging of this second bequest of his slides.
Access to these images would not have been possible without her generous
contribution.
