Notes on Kite Aerial Photography: Photo Gallery

More of Schloss Charlottenburg
Berlin, Germany

Views of the central fountain of Schloss Charlottenburg's formal garden as seen from the ground and from directly overhead. There are nice people shadows in the overhead shot. (Canon S100 Digital Elph and Canon 24-mm, July 2000)

There have been occasional posts on this site's discussion page regarding travel with KAP gear. I am always somewhat amused, and amazed, that the gaggle batteries, electronics and wires associated with my KAP travels does not draw close attention at airports and other inspection stations. But for some reason inspectors do not seem interested in the gear. I carry a booklet of KAP photos to help explain my travel artifacts but it has yet to have an interested audience. Not that I am complaining.

A mix of ground and airborne shots of the castle. In the upper right you can see the 'embroidery' of the baroque garden plan. (Canon S100 Digital Elph and Canon 24-mm, July 2000)

On this trip I traveled with the Canon Rebel rig and several kites. My old faithful Sutton 16 and Sutton 30 kites saw relatively little use while the carbon-framed Rokkaku was the star of the trip. I had a 12 volt field battery charger and assorted repair materials. While in Berlin I bought a 220V transformer to power he field charger and that seemed to work just fine. As a trip to England approaches for the summer of 2001 I am working on reducing the field kit to the essentials and will report at some point what makes the cut.

These are views of the river Spree taken from a vantage point above the formal gardens of Schloss Charlottenburg. In the upper images you can see the rows of trees that define the garden's edge. The Spree looks dark and still (Canon 24-mm, July 2000)

All things considered it was quite easy to travel with the KAP gear. I am also pleased to report that it was reasonably straightforward to adjust my style from steady sea breezes of California to the convective currents of the continent. Having the lightweight and relatively large Rokkaku along the way was a big plus. The winds, while light and variable, were workable and the local populace supportive. My only wish would have been to have more time. It would have been nice to shoot this location, and others encountered on this trip, at a more leisurely pace. Such is often the nature of travel.

As the light failed at the end of the day I had several exposed rolls in the bag and pleasant memories to boot (Canon S100 Digital Elph, July 2000)
