Model (as-built) tested
under overcast sky
|
We built a model of the space pictured
in the sketch above. Next, we took it outside during an overcast
afternoon to observe how the light affected interior.

We
then modified the model several ways: first we covered the clerestory
(visible in the picture above on the left), next we 'closed' the side
window and uncovered the clerestory. Thirdly, we kept the window
covered and clerestory opened, but this time we painted the roof black (in
the 'as-built' version it was white). Click on the thumbnail images
below to see larger pictures.

|
Reduced Clerestory
|
As
the sky cleared up, the light coming into our model produced sharper, more
dramatic effects. This time the side window in the model was left as
built, and the clerestory opening was reduced, producing more defined
light spots on the back wall. The clerestory was facing South-West
direction, and the sky was clear.

|
Closed Window
|
With
the sky still bright, we covered the wall window and left the clerestory
as-built. The clerestory, just like in the previous case, was facing
South-West direction. The resulting band of light adorning the back wall
was striking!
|
Colored Clerestory
|
Lastly,
we uncovered the side window, lined the clerestory with neon yellow paper
and turned it all around. Click on any images in the matrix to take
a closer look.
