Dynamic Effects Exercise

Introduction

Mark Anderson's graduate architecture studio at UC Berkeley worked with the Tinkers Workshop, a nonprofit community group in Berkeley for the spring of 2004.  The Tinkers work with tinkerers of all ages - especially kids.  They tinker with all kinds of materials -  especially bicycles.  Sylwia and Ursula were part of the studio and used the interactions between the rammed earth structures and light for this exercise about the dynamic effects of daylight.

We measured the illuminance and photographed each of the rammed earth structures every five minutes for about a four hour period on Sunday, 16 May.  Light was measured at four points - north, south, east, and west (below, from left.)

Next we assigned musical tones along four octaves to ranges of light readings, and used Reason software to develop a four part musical piece of setting sun and rammed earth.

The Main Wall

Below is the series of images taken every ten minutes by Sylwia of the main wall at the eastern edge of the site, during a period of about four hours.
