1905 - California Hall
1914 - Naval Architecture
1930 - Giannini Hall
1948 - Lewis Hall
1958 - Hertz Hall
1962 - Hildebrand Hall
1971 - Evans Hall
1980 - Bechtel Hall
1990 - Koshland Hall

Building: California Hall
Completion Date: 1905
Architect: John Galen Howard
How is the window made?
This large staircase window consists of 16 glass panels with thick wooden frame.  Windows are not operable and the window is set in a thick wall.
How does it feel
This window emphasizes the grand staircase that it lights up.  This is in direct contrast to the other smaller windows in the building.  The window also lights up the lobby and directs the occupants attention towards the stairs.

Building: Naval Architecture Building
Completion Date: 1914
Architect: John Galen Howard
How is the window made?
The window consists of 3 large windows, each window containing 24 panels connected with a light wood frame.  THis is a double hung window with the bottom half operable.
How does it feel
This is a large north facing window that brings a lot of light into this graduate study room.  This makes this a pleasant space to study in, but I wonder about thermal comfort during the winter months.

Building: Giannini Hall
Completion Date: 1930
Architect: William C. Hays
How is the window made?
The window has 20 glass panels with thin mullions between them.  The window is set in a think wall, with slanted sides that help mediate between the bright window and the darker interior walls.
How does it feel
This large window, due to it's situation in a think wall, creates a cozy place to read, with a nice gradient of light for whatever activity may take place there.

Building: Lewis Hall
Completion Date: 1948
Architect: E. Geoffrey Bangs
How is the window made?
This window has four glass panels with the bottom one operable.  The window is set in a thick wall, and there are two set backs on the sides of the window, and the wall at the top and bottom of the window is slanted.
How does it feel
This window does not provide a lot of light to the stairwell due to the tree that is right outside and also because the stairwell is located in the intersection of Lewis and Latimer Halls.  One other interesting aspect of this window is that it is cut off by the landing.

Building: Hertz Memorial Hall of Music
Completion Date: 1958
Architect: Gardner A. Dailey and Associates
How is the window made?
This window goes from the floor to the ceiling and is part of the window wall in the entrance lobby.  You have thick dividers between the glass panels and the structural columns also break up the windows.
How does it feel
I visited the space at 11 am so there was only ambient light in the lobby, which provided adequate light for basic lobby activities, walking, mingling, etc..  But I wonder how comfortable the space is in the afternoon.

Building: Hildebrand Hall
Completion Date: 1966
Architect: Anshen & Allen
How is the window made?
This is a basic awning window. Thin aluminum casing and the window is tinted.
How does it feel
These windows have the punched window feel to them.  They do not seem to relate to any activity going on inside the building.  Some of these windows provide light to circulation space, others to offices.  Also, the tint in the window creates a dark and dingy environment.

Building: Evans Hall
Completion Date: 1971
Architect: Gardner A. Dailey & Associates
How is the window made?
This window has 2 glass panels set in an aluminum frame.  Both panels are operable, and there are blinds that help regulate the amount of light entering the space.
How does it feel
These windows on the 10th floor open to the courtyard and provide the hallway with natural light.  This is a welcomed change from the dark corridors of the rest of Evans, and these windows make this the most inviting space (other than the courtyard) in the whole building.

Building: Bechtel Hall
Completion Date: 1980
Architect: George Matsumoto & Associates
How is the window made?
Here we have a window wall, with floor to ceiling glass windows and doors.  There is an aluminum frame.
How does it feel
The problem with the window wall for the conference room is that it creates a lot of glare for anybody sitting on the other side of the room.

Building: Koshland Hall
Completion Date: 1990
Architect:
Hellmuth, Obata and Kassabaum
How is the window made?
This is a floor to ceiling window made of 8 glass panes and think aluminum mullions.
How does it feel
I believe this is a useless window because it does nothing but create glare.  It is located in a part of the corridor that is not heavily used, and while walking in the corridor that is perpendicular to it the window gives the false impression that there is actually something to be seen there.  Also, the four windows of this type on each floor face east and west, thus adding to the glare problems all day long.
