Assignment #6: Windows by Decade Exercise

1905 - California Hall
1917 - Gilman Hall
1920 - Dwinelle Hall Annex
1941 - Minor Hall
1958 - Hertz Memorial Hall of Music
1964 - Birge Hall
1970 - Moffit Library
1999 - Haas Pavillion

Building: California Hall
Completion Date: 1905
Architect: John Galen Howard
How is the window made?
These are casement windows with a painted wood sash & jamb, set in very thick walls.  There is also a fixed upper section which is partially hidden on the interior by the suspended ceiling.
How does it feel
The windows are large and offer adequate light and ventilation.  Occupants, however, often work with the blinds down and electric lighting (incl. desk lamps), perhaps due to heat gain (windows have clear glass and no external shading devices).

Building: Gilman Hall
Completion Date: 1917
Architect: John Galen Howard
How is the window made?
These are double-hung, with 4/4 painted wood sash & jamb.  Walls are very thick, and the windows reach the suspended ceiling.
How does it feel
These windows are large and beautiful, the interior space is adequately lit, electric lights are not always used.  Heat gain is a problem in the afternoon.

Building: Dwinelle Hall Annex
Completion Date: 1920
Architect: John Galen Howard
How is the window made?
Double-hung window with a 6/6 painted wood sash.
How does it feel
The studio space is very comfortable, well-lit, and well-ventilated.  Multiple windows allow for flexibility and user control of ventilation to individual work spaces.

Building: Minor Hall
Completion Date: 1941
Architect: Arthur Brown, Jr.
How is the window made?
This is an operable window comprised of an upper awning section, a central fixed section, and a lower section which opens inward.  Mullions are made of painted metal.
How does it feel
The window provides daylight and natural ventilation to the staircase area.  This part of the staircase is much more pleasant/comfortable than the floors above and below which are not as well lit or ventilated (electric wall fixtures).

Building: Hertz Memorial Hall of Music
Completion Date: 1958
Architect: Gardner A. Dailey and Associates
How is the window made?
These windows frame the glass door and are not operable.  Clear glass is set in a painted wood jamb; external overhang provides shading.
How does it feel
The room is a bit dim, but it is a type of lounge / music room, where the daylight provided is adequate, and visual emphasis is placed on the garden outdoors.  Ventilation is inadequate; the door is left open and the room is quite stuffy.

Building: Birge Hall
Completion Date: 1964
Architect: Wernecke & Warnecke
How is the window made?
This is a tall, operable window, with a painted metal sash.  It has a fixed upper section, a central casement section, and a lower section which opens inward.
How does it feel
I don't think the window is experienced or used to its full potential: electric lights are used constantly, and the window is kept closed.

Building: Moffit Library
Completion Date: 1970
Architect: John Carl Warnecke & Associates
How is the window made?
Each window is composed of a large, fixed pane of tinted glass with painted metal mullions.  Concrete walls are relatively thin, and an overhead balcony provides additional shading.
How does it feel
The large openings are beautiful; however, the interior space is a bit dim and the building relies on electric lighting and mechanical ventilation.  The space would be much more inviting if the windows were operable.

Building: Haas Pavillion
Completion Date: renovation completed 1999
Architect: Ellerbe Becket
How is the window made?
Windows are composed of a fixed upper section, a casement section, and a lower section which opens inward.  Walls are thick, and the window mullions are made of painted metal.
How does it feel
This is a great exercise room, located on the North side of the building.  These windows are located along three of the four walls, providing lots of light and adequate (cross-)ventilation.
