Assignment #6: Window by Decades

1905 California Hall
Building: California Hall
Completion Date: 1905
Architect: John Galen Howard
How is the window made?
These are casement windows with wood framing set within 1'6"thick wall.  The single panes window is operable.  
How does it feel
The windows are large and tall with operable function.  However, no one opens the window, therefore, it does not offer adequate ventilation.  There is a tremendous of heat gain during the morning time because it is facing East.  

 


 

1911 Durant Hall
Building: Durant Hall
Completion Date: 1911

How is the window made?
These are set in a wooden frame and sash. Double hung with large single panes of glass. It is set within 1'thick wall and is operable up and down.
How does it feel
These windows are operable.  It allows adequate ventilation throughout the building.  The occupants always open the windows.  And it allows adequate light into the corridor.      

 

1923 Women Faculty Club
Building: Women Faculty Club
Completion Date: 1923

How is the window made?
These are casement windows with a wood sash & jamb.  It is operable in a up and down manner.  However, the upper section is fixed.  The outside framing is painted in white color; whereas, the interior of the framing is painted in wooden color to match the interior decoration. 
How does it feel
The windows frame the outside landscape.  Even though it is facing West and East, the the room does not have too much heat gain because the trees and plantings outside block the direct sun.  However, there is inadequate light inside.  

 


 

1930 International House
Building: International House
Completion Date: 1930
Architect: Geroge W. Kelham
How is the window made?
The windows in I-house have thin metal framings around.  The glass is much bigger than the 1920s building because of the change in technology.  Some of them even tinted. 
How does it feel
The windows are large and offer adequate light and ventilation.  Even though most of the corridor windows are facing West, the interiors do not gain too much heat because the occupants open the windows frequently.  

 


 

1954 Alumni House
Building: Alumni House
Completion Date: 1954
Architect: Clarence Mayhew
How is the window made?
The window treatment is similar to International House.  It has a thin metal framing around the window, and the glass goes from the floor to the ceiling.    
How does it feel
The windows are large and offer adequate light and ventilation.  The large operable windows allow occupant to relate themselves to nature.  It is modern style.  However, the occupants seldom open the window because of security reason.  It gets hot inside.  

 


 

1966 Zellerbach 
Building: Zellerbach Auditorium
Completion Date: 1966
Architect: Hardison & DeMars
How is the window made?
Technology allows window to sit flash at the corner without any frames to support.  The glass is an double panel which reduce heat loses and heat gains.  The windows mostly are non-operable because of the mechanical ventilation within the building.  
How does it feel
The windows definitely show the advanced in technology.  However, the reflection of the windows reduce the translucency of the interior.  You can hardly relate yourself to the activities happening inside.  Since it is non-operable, it also separates you from the outside environment.  

 


 

1993 Tang Center
Building: Tang Center
Completion Date: 1993
Architect: --
How is the window made?
These windows are tinted.  The lower section of the window is operable which allows adequate ventilation within the building.  There color of the tinted window also matched perfectly with the exterior stucco walls.  
How does it feel
The windows are double panes and tinted; therefore, they reduce heat gained from direct sun.  However, green tinted window makes me feel isolation to the outside world.  The large windows offer adequate light into the space and atrium.
