During the span of a single day we are exposed to an extraordinary range of luminous environments. In an ideal world the lighting characteristics of each space would be well matched to the visual activities underway (e.g., walking, reading, shaving, taking notes, romancing). Ideally the occupants of that space could shape the character of light as well. In this exercise you will experience and document at least 15 spaces that you encounter during the course of your routine in a single day.

For each space surveyed, complete the form (opposite side of page) using the following procedure:

1.       Experience the space for at least 10 minutes.

2.       Enter a space description, light source(s), and your activity on the form.

3.       Rate the space by voting bright or dim and adequate or inadequate.

4.       Finally, measure the Illuminance on the horizontal workplane at several locations in the space. Place a circle to represent your survey  location on the scale provided. Then represent the entire range of values in the space by shading a bar.

Word document with handout and log form.
